Sleep Apnea is a disorder where a person has pauses (known as apneas) in their breathing during their sleep. This could last from a few seconds to several minutes and can take place anywhere from 5 to 30 times a minute. These apneas are caused by a blocked or narrowed airway due to several factors including relaxed throat muscles, your tongue or tonsils, the shape of your head or neck, as well as being overweight. This disorder causes feelings of drowsiness and lethargy all day due to the discomfort and choking during sleep, but can be easily avoided with the use of a simple oral appliance.
